Father's journey in baby's memory

The money will raise money for Glan Clwyd Hospital's children's ward

A parent who lost his baby daughter from meningitis days after she was born is raising money for the hospital where she was treated.

On Father's Day, Alun Jones, is cycling around 60 miles from Menai Bridge to Flint in memory of Elain Aur.

He says the response from customers in his butchers shop in Cerrigydridion, Conwy had been "phenomenal".

He is fund raising for the children's ward at Glan Clwyd Hospital and for research into meningococcal meningitis.

Mr Jones said his daughter had not been ill beforehand in January and said Elain had woken up in the morning and seemed fine.

However within hours they took her to Glan Clwyd where two doctors from Alder Hey in Liverpool were sent for.

He said initially there was no sign of any rash which only appeared after they arrived at the hospital.

"I have to thank the doctors and medical staff, they were wonderful," Mr Jones said.

"I can only hope we can raise some money to help others at the Paddington ward (children's ward) and maybe help save the life of another baby."

He said the support he and his wife Teleri Llwyd had received from friends and family had been invaluable.

"We just try to keep going and keep ourselves busy."
