Lake Nyos is a deep lake high on the flank of an inactive volcano in Cameroon. A pocket of magma lies beneath the lake, charging the water with an estimated 90 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2). The quagga, an extinct subspecies of the plains zebra, was once found in great numbers in parts of South Africa. It differed from other zebras in that its coat was sandy brown and its legs and tail whitish; only its head, neck, and shoulders were dark-striped.
