Lindh was a Swedish Social Democrat and an important proponent of the European Union. She was Chairman of the Council of the European Union in 2001 and, at the time of her murder, a prime candidate to become the next President of the Social Democrats and Prime Minister of Sweden. She was attacked just prior to a Swedish referendum on the Euro, at the height of a public campaign she led for the approval of the currency. Why was the perpetrator's sentence changed for a brief period?

2 Vote(s)

Lake Nyos is a deep lake high on the flank of an inactive volcano in Cameroon. A pocket of magma lies beneath the lake, charging the water with an estimated 90 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2). In 1986, a limnic eruption at Lake Nyos triggered the sudden release of about 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 that rushed down nearby valleys, displacing all the air and suffocating up to 1,800 people within 20 km of the lake. What methods are being used to prevent future disasters at the lake?

2 Vote(s)

Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) celebrates the surrender of Japan, the last Axis power to yield, and the subsequent end of WWII. Though Japan's surrender was announced on August 15th, the terms were not signed until September 2nd. One of the most famous images depicting the jubilation of V-J Day was shot in Times Square, NY, when Alfred Eisenstaedt, photographing for Life magazine, captured the moment a sailor embraced a nurse and kissed her. Who were the subjects of this iconic photo?

2 Vote(s)

The quagga, an extinct subspecies of the plains zebra, was once found in great numbers in parts of South Africa. It differed from other zebras in that its coat was sandy brown and its legs and tail whitish; only its head, neck, and shoulders were dark-striped. The quagga was hunted to extinction for its meat and hide, and to preserve feed for domestic stock. It was the first extinct creature to have its DNA studied. What did the study reveal?

2 Vote(s)
