Bulgaria was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire in 1396, but Turkish rule was often oppressive, and rebellions were frequent. In 1908, as the revolution in Turkey gained momentum, Prince Ferdinand declared Bulgaria an independent state and named himself czar. The de facto ruler of the Manchu Qing Dynasty, Cixi ruled China for much of the period between 1861 and 1908. Following Emperor Xianfeng's death as well as that of his only heir, Empress Dowager Cixi violated normal succession order and named her nephew, 3 year-old Guangxu, to the throne.
